In this world, we're way too quick to compare ourselves to other people. It's not something we want to do, but we find ourselves doing regardless. But before we compare ourselves to people, we need to remember that we don't know where they're coming from. We don't know what God has delivered them from, we don't know their testimony. They could be healing from e.g. brokenness in their family, and God wants to show them how much he loves them, in order to make them whole in Christ. I'm not saying that our past is a determinant of how much God will bless us, but God knows each and every one of his children's needs, and he deals with each of us on an individual level. We're not just numbers to him, he KNOWS us, and knows exactly what we need, in every season of our lives.
"...but they are only comparing themselves with each other, using themselves as the standard of measurement. How ignorant!" - 2 Corinthians 10:12 NLT
Paul's right, you know (the author of 2 Corinthians). To use people as the standard of what is good is extremely ignorant. At the end of the day, we could copy what someone else is doing and, although it may seem great to the world, it won't be even good enough to God, because that may not be what he called us to do (check out my previous post, Living My Best Life). God's will is the standard of excellence in our lives.
"For wherever there is jealous and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind." - James 3:16 NLT
A jealous life is not a peaceful life. And with jealousy could come other kinds of evil such as hatred, anger, insecurity, distrust in God, I could really go on. We need to stop trusting our flesh that tells us we're being short-changed, because firstly God owes us nothing. This might come as a shocker, but he really owes us nothing. The reward of our worship is Christ himself, but that's a story for another post. Secondly, God's ways are not our ways (Isaiah 55:8-9 ESV).
Here are a few more bible verses to meditate on:
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. Submit all your ways to him and he will make your paths straight." - Proverbs 3:5-6
"Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won't need to compare yourself to anyone else. For we are each responsible for our own conduct." - Galatians 6:4-45 NLT
Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out." - 1 Timothy 6:6-7 NKJV
The grass isn't greener on the other side. It's greener where you water it. *drops mic*.
