Feelings are deceitful y'all. This applies to every area of your life: waiting to “feel” like praying to God, not going to the gym unless you "feel" like, dating a guy because you have “feelings” for him; I could go on and on.
Feelings are deceitful.
Not all the time, I know. But in many instances of our lives, we shouldn’t do (or not do) something solely based on our feelings towards that thing.
I wouldn’t say don’t ever let feelings dictate what you do (because e.g. sometimes you may “feel” at peace with a decision because it’s the right decision to make), but just be very careful, because the honest truth is that your feelings matter very little. If I only read my bible when I feel like it, I would be very inconsistent with my quiet time with God and my life would be a mess (God gives me wisdom and direction). If I only eat healthy when I feel like it (which is never), I would most likely be obese and have diabetes. We often give our feelings more control than necessary.
Ever felt like you didn’t feel God? But you know He’s always there, right?
What about your feelings towards studying? “I cannot come and kill myself” is our new favourite saying when it comes to doing things that seem too hard. But if I studied only when I felt like it (which is NEVER), I would’ve probs failed uni right now.
Your emotions are meant to report to you, not dictate you.
He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, but whoever walks wisely will be delivered.
- Proverbs 28:26
And how do you walk wisely? By keeping your focus on God and His word, rather than how you feel.
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can understand it?
- Jeremiah 17:9
I know I definitely don’t understand my heart sometimes. For example, my heart likes to play games with me and tell me I like a guy that I know I don't or shouldn't. And the times I decided to use my BRAIN and wisdom from GOD, I was always better off.
There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.
- Proverbs 14:12
Girlll (Solomon), you’re preaching to the choir.
So how do we tame our feelings? Firstly we have to control our thoughts. If our thoughts are aligned with God’s word, our emotions will follow suit.
Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh (Galatians 5:16).
If our feelings don’t match up with God’s word, then we’re the problem. Our feelings are lying to us.
Let God be true but every man a liar (Romans 3:4).
Peace, love and blessings,
